Kostyrko and Olive recorded this music in a small studio in Kobe, on March 24, 2019. This was their first meeting. All the music here has been selected from several hours of real-time interaction, and is presented as recorded, with minimal editing. The title, a Russian term which can be roughly translated as “the season of bad roads”, is, according to the Oxford Reference Dictionary, “the brief period in spring when there is a rapid thaw of lying snow and frozen ground”.

Nick Ostrum:
Rasputitsa is Russian for “the season of bad roads”, and the title perfectly captures the sense of isolation, solitude, and detachment that this album conjures. Culled from hours of recordings, these four tracks are carefully constructed crossed frequencies in a soundworld of abandoned warehouses, corroding industrial complexes, and desolate snow. A distant radio mashes static, industrial ambience, and textured electronic crackles. Muffled engines churn and hollow tones agitate to rise above the underlying ambient susurrations. Detached hisses ride atop jangling metallics. Rasputitsa seems to survey time and two-dimensional space, evoking radio transmission from an unknowable sender, intertwined with other ambient electronic fragments whose origins and meanings remain cryptic.

Ed Pinsent, The Sound Projector:
Tension and grit are the order of the day, especially on the first two tracks which are true paranoia-assaults akin to being hunted and eaten by the Baba Yaga. Plenty of electronic hum and grind, sometimes with shortwave radio distorto-messages, creating a good toxic atmosphere.

Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly:
A certain harshness is the approach here. Harsh but with careful consideration; that is a common thread to most of Olive's collaborations. Textures here are carefully constructed, but the results are somewhat louder and stranger music (than Eidolon) but with a similar level of control. Olive plays the surface below objects, crackling and rustling like plastic bags caught in the wind, and Kostyrko layers his synthesizers with similar sounds, the imitation of Olive's, and different sounds, to mark the 'other' in the process. This too I found a most enjoyable release and again, not the sort of traditional improvised music, but now the harsher end of electro-acoustic music.
