about

Phil Maguire: synthesizer, computer
Tim Olive: magnetic pickups, electronics

Recorded in London and Kobe, summer 2020
Catalog Number: 845-15
Format: Glass-mastered CD, hand-stamped recycled chipboard cover
Limited Edition of 100
Mixed by Tim Olive
Mastered by Phil Maguire

Tim Olive’s planned May 2020 tour of the UK, which was to include a number of performances with Phil Maguire, was cancelled due to Covid-19, so here they present the recorded results of a long-distance meld. The two agreed to record a number of 10-minute solo pieces with no discussion of anything other than length. These solo pieces were overlaid, minimally edited, and mixed to create the four “distant duo” pieces which comprise this release, the first collaboration between London-based Scot Phil Maguire and Kobe-based Canadian Tim Olive.

Mark Wharton, Idwal Fisher:
Within Invoer’s four tracks you will find subtle machine drones and faint pulses, tensed strings that vibrate on but the softest of breezes, gentle perambulations where the vague whiff of shortwave catches your nose unseen like pipe smoke. These are long-distance collaborations that should have taken place here in the UK but were cancelled because of you-know-what. London-based Maguire works with synthesizer and computers which no doubt contributed to the throbbing nature of most of this and Olive as ever prizing his sounds from magnetic pick-ups. Its a well-matched release and one of 845 Audio’s best.

Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly:
Phil Maguire is originally from Scotland, now based in London, and works with computers, synthesizers and tape equipment. Olive is working with his trusted magnetic pickups and electronics. Individually they recorded four times ten minutes of solo pieces, which would be stuck together and mixed by Tim Olive. It is a match that works very well. In each of the four pieces, there is an excellent balance between both players and the way they use their sounds. There are moments of silence and there are moments of unrest. Maguire's synthesizers are minimal yet full of tension and attention. Olive's contribution is percussive, scratching, hissing and buzzing. There is quite a bit of repetition, not necessarily in the form of rhythm, but as in longer loops of sound that repeat. None of that is on a strict course, so with all the unevenness you hardly notice this, but at one point you can think: I heard that bit of sound before. I enjoyed this release a lot!
